Economic growth in China's central and western regions is catching up to their eastern counterparts as GDP slows in major cities such as Beijing and Shanghai.

The latest data from the National Bureau of Statistics shows GDP in the developing western and central regions have surpassed the national average in some cases. While Inner Mongolia has the second highest rate of economic growth in the country, Beijing ranks last. Shanghai's and Shenzhen's growth clocked in at lower than 10 percent while some cities in central and western regions are enjoying rates higher than 13 percent.

Analysts point out that the gap between regional economies is narrowing, but GDP growth is not full representative of the economic performance and competitiveness of a region.
