The European Commission is imposing several punitive duties on China, and will launch an anti-dumping investigation. Analysts say the move is due to the region's severe economic problems.

The commission is extending an 18-year old anti-dumping duty on Chinese bicycles to 2016. The 48.5 percent levy was supposed to expire in October. The EU will also start collecting a five-year punitive duty on ceramic tiles imported from China in mid September.

The European Commission is also about to launch an anti-dumping investigation on some Chinese fiberglass products. And if the alleged dumping is confirmed, the commission could impose a temporary duty on those products before the end of March, and a five-year tariff before the end of September.

Analysts say trade protectionism has been increasing in Europe recently, due to its debt crisis, slowing economic growth and rising unemployment.
