Since the first H-share company, Tsingdao Brewery, commenced trading in Hong Kong 18 years ago, mainland companies have become major players on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange. As of July, the value of mainland companies accounted for nearly 70 percent of the total trading volume.

By the end of July, the value of mainland companies accounted for 55.4 percent of the assets of Hong Kong Stock Exchange and 68.6 percent of its volume. The mainland companies received enough convertible funds, and helped expand and diversify the Hong Kong market.

The Hong Kong Stock Exchange also plans to launch a yuan liquidity pool as early as September. The RMB Equity Trading Support Facility will serve as a back-up facility to enable investors to buy yuan stocks with Hong Kong dollars if they have difficulty in obtaining enough yuan.

Charles Li, CEO of HKEX said, "The globalization of RMB will be a trend. Hong Kong will benefit a lot from it, and make a major contribution in the meantime."

The Hong Kong Stock Exchange extended its trading hours this March. The CEO says the main reason behind that decision was to increase the time for exchange between Hong Kong and the Chinese mainland.

Li said, "It is a big trend to interact, or even to exchange between the Hong Kong market and Chinese mainland markets. It reveals Hong Kong's strategy and the mainland's demand."

Daily trades on the spot market of the Hong Kong Stock Exchange increased by 15 percent in the first half of 2011. The exchange also ranks at the top in attracting IPOs.
