German consumers react differently to sluggish GDP growth

And caution is growing among German consumers, as the country's slow second quarter growth offered a surprisingly downbeat sign for the global economy. Some shoppers in Berlin were bracing themselves for a tougher economic climate, but some remained calm.

A small business owner in Berlin said, "One has investment funds, one has shares, and you see them slowly fade away, so yes one does get a bit anxious. That's the way it is."

A designer and mother of two in Berlin said, "No, I don't think (I am spending less money). We haven't been affected by it too much so far, but of course, with regards to bigger purchases one considers whether you can still afford it or whether you would rather wait."
