After Italy's cut, Spain - another struggling eurozone nation - is paying more on short term debt. The country sold nearly 4.5 billion euros in short-term debt Tuesday, and its borrowing costs rose even as the European Central Bank moved to support the nation's debt.

Hitting the top of its 3.5-4.5 billion euro target, the Treasury is seeking a reasonable demand on debt markets. However, its purchases have not shaken off concerns that a debt crisis can be fully contained. The downgrade of Italy's credit rating heightened the gloom and sent both Italian and Spanish bond yields higher.
