The economic recovery of the UK has struggled this year, hit by falling wages, the government’s austerity measures and the cooling global economy. But data from the Office for National Statistics shows Britain’s economy began to recover in the third quarter of 2011.

The economy expanded by half a percent in the July to September period. That’s better than forecast, and compared with a one-tenth-of-a-percent expansion in the second quarter.

But analysts say the figures shouldn’t be interpreted as a big rebound, as growth in the second quarter had been dampened by one-off factors. Service sector growth was up seven-tenths of a percent, against a rise of two-tenths of a percent in the previous quarter.

While output of the production sector rose half a percent in the third quarter, compared with a 1.2 percent fall previously.
