Greece's conservative leader Antonis Samaras has met with new Prime Minister Lucas Papademos. The meeting was held after Samaras wrote to the country's rescue creditors to express support for long-term debt-reduction targets set under the EU-IMF bailout program.

Samaras, whose party backs Papademos’ coalition, had been under mounting EU pressure to provide support for the targets in writing. Without such support, Greece risks being left without continued rescue payments and would face default in mid-December. It was not immediately clear whether Samaras’ letter would satisfy the EU demands.

Papademos’ new government was appointed earlier this month after political turmoil led to the resignation of Prime Minister George Papandreou. Papademos is a former central banker and deputy head of the European Central Bank.

The technocratic government is expected to lead Greece until early elections take place in February.
