Ahead of the EU summit, US stocks edged up on Wednesday, on the bet of a good result from discussions in Europe on Friday.

The Dow closed up four-tenths of one percent, at 12,196. The S & P 500 was up about a fifth of one percent, at 1,261. The Nasdaq closed the session flat, at 2,649.

Meanwhile, the euro held steady against the dollar on lingering hopes the summit can ease Europe’s debt crisis.

Analysts say, the choppy session followed gains in U.S. stocks since the start of the week, built on the notion that the European Union summit will create a more workable solution to the crisis.

Analysts added, an agreement earlier in the week between Germany and France on tighter fiscal controls for the euro zone had triggered buying, but expectations may have gone too far.
