BRICS asks WTO to fight trade protectionism

At the WTO Ministerial Conference, BRICS members have underscored the key role of the World Trade Organisation in keeping protectionism at bay in the difficult economic environment.

Trade ministers of Brazil, China, India, Russia and South Africa came out with a common position, urging the WTO to maintain its central role in multi-lateral trade disciplines.

The WTO Ministerial Conference will deliberate how to revive the stalled talks for achieving a global trade agreement under the 10-year old Doha Round of trade negotiations.

Chen Deming, China's Minister of Commerce, says that the amid global economic downturn, BRICS members should jointly oppose trade protectionism in all its forms and push for a positive outcome of the Doha Round.

Chen Deming said, "With regard to the global trade system, all BRICS members have agreed on a joint effort to oppose trade protectionism and stick to multi-lateral trade disciplines."
