At the start of the new year, Chinese airlines and travelers are enjoying some good news. Jet fuel prices and fuel surcharges have dropped.

Since January 1st this year, jet fuel prices have been adjusted down, by about 290 yuan from nearly 7650 yuan per ton in December 2011. Currently, major Chinese air carriers including Air China, China Eastern Airlines and China Southern Airlines have to spend more than 40 percent of their total costs on jet fuel.

Correspondingly, fuel surcharges have also begun to dip. And long-distance commuters are expected to benefit the most. Several airlines like Air China have decreased the fuel surcharge for above-800 kilometer flight travel from 140 yuan to 130 yuan.

But that the fuel surcharge for routes of 800 kilometers or less remains unchanged at 70 yuan. Analysts say more airlines are expected to follow suit.
