At China's annual energy meeting on Tuesday, Liu Tienan, head of the National Energy Administration says the government will adopt multiple measures to ensure energy supply this year.

China is the world’s biggest energy consumer. In 2011, it put another 90 gigawatts of power generating capacity into operation.

Liu noted that new and renewable energy production grew at its fastest rate. The government says it will focus on constructing five major energy bases -- aiming to raise coal capacity by 200 million tonnes this year and total installed power capacity by another 70 gigawatts. It also promises to boost natural gas supplies in the coming years and increase the number of household natural gas consumers to 250 million.

Liu said: "We highlight energy security. In the meantime, we try to control total energy consumption by adjusting the consumption structure. That will help facilitate the transformation of China’s growth pattern and boost economic development. "
