It's the end of the road for the high-stakes merger plan, between the New York Stock Exchange and Germany’s Deutsche Boerse. The head of the European Commission's anti-trust division says he'll block the nine billion U.S. dollar deal.

That’s according to the Financial Times newspaper. When asked for comment, a spokesman for the European Commission says a final decision is expected as soon as February 9th.

Meanwhile, representatives for both exchanges say they haven’t been notified of any decision. The proposed tie-up is part of a wave of merger plans for global exchanges, that began early last year.

But this deal in particular has faced intense scrutiny by regulators and politicians, right from the start.
