It's been a bumper year for Taiwan's tourism industry. Official figures show, despite the gloomy global economy, the island reaped as much as 300 billion New Taiwan dollars in tourism revenue. That’s around 9.9 billion U.S. dollars.

The total of number of visitors also stood at a new high, to top six million. That’s an increase of over nine percent from a year earlier. The growth was much higher than the global average of 4 to 4.5 percent.

December alone saw more than 640-thousand tourists visiting Taiwan. That marked a new monthly high, for the second consecutive month.

Taiwan tourism authorities attribute the growth to a skyrocketing increase in the number of visitors from Hong Kong and Macau. To continue the upward trend, authorities say they've outlined more specified measures to attract tourists from around the world.
