With less than two weeks to go before the much-anticipated Spring Festival holiday, most Chinese are finalizing their travel plans. And many are also choosing to spend their week-long break in Taiwan island. The flurry in tourist activity comes as the Chinese Mainland eases rules on individual travel across the Strait.

Some local travel agencies say people are still trying to make reservations although the price of an eight-day group excursion to Taiwan during the Spring Festival has risen to more than 7,000 yuan. That’s nearly double the non-peak-travel price of around 4,000 yuan. Even so, almost all direct flights from Shanghai to Taipei during the holiday are sold out. Chances are also slim for people trying to make a transfer via a third city. As a result, some travelers have had to cancel their planned trips.

One traveler said: "Now the flight ticket is very expensive and there is no way to book one. So I have no choice. "

One travel agency staff said: "Now travel to Taiwan during the Spring Festival has all been booked. In terms of flight tickets, only a few first-class ones are available. For an individual traveler, a single trip could cost around 3,000 yuan."

In Taiwan itself, the tourism industry is already feeling the effects of the Spring Festival boom. Every room at this hotel in central Taiwan is booked throughout the week-long holiday, even though the room rate is as much as 200 yuan higher than normal.

One Taiwan hotel owner said: "We have spent quite a lot of money on renovations. Now we have rooms that can host two to eight people. That’s why we have to make some price adjustments. "

And taxi operators in Taiwan say they will raise fares by 5 to 10 yuan a ride during the Spring Festival.
