Guidance for 2012 wealth management in China

01-11-2012 14:38 BJT

Though there’s a wealth of products, their performance in 2011 was lackluster as the global financial downturn weighed on markets. For individual investors tired of all the volatility last year, wealth management products may be an option. We hear from analysts on the risks and benefits.

As more and more Chinese funds look to invest abroad, the number of qualified domestic institutional investor applications is rising.

One fund company says it sees the gold and energy sectors as the most attractive. It’s expecting its offshore investments to yield decent returns in 2012.

Zhang Jingguo, investment analyst from Assets MGMT. Company, said, “We invest with a balanced point of view. In general, our gains in 2012 are expected to reach about 4 to 5 percent level, even higher for certain products."

In China, there is an ample number of wealth management products for consumers to choose from. Experts suggest inexperienced investors hire fund experts to manage high risk investments.

Liu Jingxin, an analyst, said, “For people who work in offices and have no time to manage their investments themselves, it would be wise for them to hire a fund manager. Also for most elderly people who know little about the market, I think its best for them to stay out of the fierce game of trading."

Experts also advise investors to determine their risk preference based on income level.

Wang Lifeng, Investment Company MD, said, "I suggest investors play safe in 2012. If you are a rather aggressive investor, I suggest an index fund; for the risk-adverse, I think cash holdings and pure debt or money market funds are better fits."

Financial experts also suggest longer-term holdings, versus chasing short term speculations.
