South Africa's manufacturing activity rebounded strongly during the first month of 2012. That’s an encouraging sign, as the manufacturing sector is the country’s second-largest employer. But as the government works hard to bring down the country’s high unemployment rate, there has been very little progress so far. As Sumitra Nydoo reports, investors are developing their own ways to support each other, especially budding entrepreneurs. The latest creative initiative is a reality television series.

A thriving small business sector is key to creating jobs in any economy. But there are many challenges facing the sector. As a result it’s done little to ease the country’s unemployment rate, which currently stands at 25%. A new private sector initiative is hoping to change this. A new reality show called the Big Break Legacy is set to hit national television in South Africa. Project leaders say they want to create employers no employees.

Ezra Mdwandwe, founder of Big Break Legacy said: “In recent months government has also put in place new measure to help the development of small businesses. It also wants to encourage entrepeurship. But small business owners and prospective entrepreneurs say they still battle to get ahead. Finance and mentorship support is still hard to come by.”

Contestant Senezile Khumalo said: “Many believe they’re better educated but still need encouragement to keep in the game, as competition is tough.”

Contestant Paul Kim said: “The new reality serious is a first in South Africa and in the world and looks set to revolutionize small business. South African business heavyweights have given their overwhelming support to the project.”

Reporter: "these 12 contestants will get all the support they need to runn their small businesses successfully. It’s a small step but a step in the right direction especially when it comes to South Africa’s high Unemployment rate.”
