India experienced its seventh quarterly economic slowdown. Q4 GDP growth came in at 6.1% year on year, lower than economist forecasts of 6.4% and it’s nearly 1%t lower versus growth in Q3. On an annual basis, this is the slowest pace in almost three years.

Continued weakness in the manufacturing sector is one of the main reasons behind the slowdown.

Economists cite high input prices and a sharp jump in borrowing costs as the primary reasons for the dip in factory output.

Unlike other Asian economies, India has struggled to contain inflation, leaving the central bank unable to adjust the policy rate too much, even with sagging growth. The new figure will become a critical data point to consider as the Reserve Bank of India holds its policy meeting in just over two weeks.
