China's stock market has grown in leaps and bounds over the years, but much remains to be improved. The Assistant Chairman of China Securities Regulatory Commission said at a press conference earlier today that China needs to strengthen surveillance of listed companies in order to create a safer trading environment.

Zhou Congjiu, Assistant Chairman of China Securities Regulatory Commission said: "To achieve a strong regulatory environment for listed companies, we must complete and strengthen the relevant laws. For example, we need to amend the Securities Law to include tortious liability. That is only one side. On the other side, it’s the company management. The core of company management is to strengthen the functions of shareholders’ meetings and the board of directors. We need to ensure this structure and system can protect shareholders’ rights from being harmed by illegal practices."
