Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy is defending his government's decision to seek help from the European Union to prop up the country's troubled banking sector. Speaking before Parliament on Wednesday, Rajoy vowed to push for fiscal and banking integration in Europe.

The Spanish PM will join the leaders of France, Germany, and Italy in Rome on June 22nd to discuss - what else - the eurozone crisis.

Spain's Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy speaks during a control session at the Spanish
Parliament, in Madrid, Wednesday, June 13, 2012.

At home, Rajoy has come under fire from many sectors, for choosing to rescue banks whilst instituting deep austerity measures. These include cuts to education, health and labour reforms that make it easier to fire workers.

Rajoy defended his decision, saying that banks would have to pay back the loan. He also points out other countries in Europe had injected funds into their banks in the years prior.

Rajoy said, "We have to bet on a fiscal and banking European integration project. I have sent a letter to Mr Barroso and Mr Van Rompuy and I will pass it on in the meeting on June 22nd in Rome, with the leaders of most important European countries, that I clearly support fiscal integration and banking integration. This will only get fixed doing our homework at home and with more European integration."
