A strong performance in June has rounded off six months of robust car sales in China. Auto sales in China rose 9.9 percent in June from a year earlier. That’s according to the goverment-sanctioned China Association of Automobile Manufacturers today.

The soaring sales were driven by price cuts, and concern about imminent purchase restrictions in some cities, where registration curbs have been put in place to control traffic. In June, automakers shipped 1.58 million passenger cars, trucks and buses in China. Vehicle sales in the first half came to 9.6 million, up 2.9 percent from a year earlier.

Car sales in the month rose 15.8 percent to 1.28 million, with sales in the first six months up 7.1 percent to 7.61 million. China is the world's biggest market in terms of the number of vehicles sold, and it's the market that automakers look to help drive weak global demand.
