In less than an hour, U.S. Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke will return to Capitol Hill, for a second day of his twice-a-year report to Congress, on the state of economy. He will testify in front of the House of Representatives’ Financial Services Committee.

On his first day before the Senate Banking Committee, Bernanke sketched a bleak picture of the U.S. economy, and warned it could darken further if Congress doesn’t reach agreement soon, to avert a budget crisis.

The Fed chairman is urging Congress to resolve its political impasses well before the year ends, to help reduce uncertainty and boost household and business confidence. But - to the disappointment of global markets - Bernanke gave few hints on whether another round of bond purchases, or quantitative easing, might be in store.
