We've also got the latest unemployment data out of the UK today. The figures show unemployment in the country easing to 8 percent in the second quarter, the lowest in nearly a year.

Despite the biting recession, the Office for National Statistics said today unemployment was down from 8.2 percent in the previous quarter, as 46,000 more people were hired in Q2. Some analysts say the decrease in unemployment was associated with job hires in the run-up to the Olympics.

But the decline came as a surprise to many analysts as the Bank of England revised down the country’s economic forecast for the year to zero.

Minutes of the BOE’s August meeting also came out today, showing that the rate-setting monetary policy committee voted unanimously to keep the main interest rate on hold.

The BOE's benchmark rate is currently sitting at a record low of 0.5 percent. The MPC also decided to leave its bond purchasing plan unchanged.
