Commerce Minister confident of achieving 7.5% growth goal

03-07-2014 16:31 BJT Special Report: 2014 NPC & CPPCC Sessions |

The Ministry of Commerce confirmed at a news conference on the sidelines of the ongoing NPC and CPPCC meetings that China now is the largest commodity trading country in the world but not yet the strongest. Meanwhile, Commerce Minister Gao Hucheng says he’s confident of seeing a 7.5-percent increase in trade this year.

Commerce Minister Gao Hucheng said during a press conference that China now is the largest trade partner to more than 120 countries and regions. China’s trade volume hit 4.16 trillion U.S. dollars in 2013, counting for about 12 percent of the global figure. Moreover, nearly 2 trillion U.S. dollars of that volume included imported goods. Despite the good news, Gao also says there’s much room for improvement.

Gao Hucheng, minister of Ministry of Commerce, said, "Most of our export products are low value-added ones, and we don’t have too many private brands. Besides, we are lagged behind in the global sales network and method. These are the problems we need to face and resolve in the future, before we grow into a strong trading country from a big one."

The minister also expressed confidence in this year’s trade situation, saying the recovery of the global economy will benefit China. He sees domestic trade opportunities as well.

"Another aspect is the innovation in system and mechanism. That will bring benefits to companies and improve their competitiveness. So, along with the big picture of the global market, we are very confident to achieve the 7.5 percent increase in trade this year," Gao said.

Gao also discussed a variety of other issues, including domestic trade, consumption, free trade zones and investments during the press conference..
