E3 – the electronic entertainment expo kicks off a 3-day extravaganza in Los Angeles Tuesday.   Thousands are descending on the convention center there from all over the world.

A man plays 'Gears of War 3' at Microsoft's Xbox 360 display at the 2012 International Consumer Electronics Show at the Las Vegas Convention Center in January 2012 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

E3 is the video game industry’s biggest party of the year

An opportunity to showcase the latest titles and flashiest technologies expected to be biggest sellers in the coming year.

Sony president Jack Tretton said, “This is the Superbowl for those of us that live and die in the gaming industry.”

But there’s some uncertainty at this year’s event, sales are down and forecasts for the future of video games are gloomy.

According to the NPD group—a video game analytics firm—April’s video game sales in the U.S. dipped 26 percent from the same month last year.  Software sales fell by almost half over the same time span.  Some industry analysts fear that the final tally for game sales in 2012 may wind up a 6-year low in the video game industry.

On Monday, Sony Corporation introduced Vita – which allows people to play a game on multiple screens.

Tretton said, “And something like the MLB franchise where I’m able to pause my season, and just pick it up on the road. Or the ability to play remotely anywhere you are not only against somebody who’s playing on a console but against somebody who’s playing on a portable.”

And Microsoft unveiled Xbox SmartGlass, software linking the world’s bestselling gaming consoles to iPhones, iPads and Android-powered gadgets.

Perhaps an acknowledgement of the rising popularity of iPADS and mobile apps and a decreasing interest in consoles.
