UN response to renewed violence in Homs, Syria

06-12-2012 11:25 BJT

The violence is Syria is continuing to escalate. The city of Homs—considered an opposition stronghold—has come under heavy artillery fire, again, and there are numerous reports of skirmishes between Syrian government forces and Syrian opposition groups in nearby towns.

In a statement Kofi Annan said that he was gravely concerned about the escalation in violence. The embattled town of Homs again ablaze as Syrian government artillery and opposition attacks continue to take their toll.

In this amateur video U.N. Monitors inspect the town of Talbiseh, 8 miles north of Homs. “See now, the effect of the missiles of the Assad systems on Talbiseh City today.” Here, according to the U.N., the battle has been intense as anytime during this 15 month conflict.

Sawsan Ghosheh -United Nations Supervision Mission in Syria (UNSMIS) spokesperson says, “The U.N. Supervision Mission is very concerned with the escalation of violence in Homs. We managed to U.N. observers are reporting that there was heavy fighting in Rastan and Talbiseh. They reported the use of heavy artillery and mortar shellings as well as firing from helicopters, machine guns and small arms in Talbiseh.

Also U.N. observers reported that the Free Syrian Army captured members, soldiers from the Syrian Army.” And in a statement Kofi Annan—the international peace envoy for Syria—said he was, quote “gravely concerned” over the escalating violence. “There are a number of indications that a large number of civilians are trapped in these towns,” he said.

With the violence increasing so is the diplomatic activity but the consensus Kofi Annan called for remains elusive. While the Russian Foreign Minister is set to travel to Iran in a bid to organize an international conference on the way forward in Syria, Western powers are still very much against Tehran's participation and here at the U.N. western powers on the Security Council are working on a draft sanctions resolution against Syria, which is being resisted by Moscow and others.
