Is Mexico the new American dream?

06-21-2012 10:39 BJT

The G20 media circus has left Los Cabos. But plenty of foreigners remain. Los Cabos, in fact, is home to many Americans.

Reporter: "The beaches are one reason why Americans like to come to Los Cabos. But there might be other reasons why people are deciding to start new lives here in Mexico."

Jane Garling moved to Los Cabos over ten years ago with her husband and thinks she found her new American dream, south of the U.S. border.

Dive shop owner Jane Garling said, "We may not have moved down here because of the economics, but now that we’re down here, and with the way everything has changed over the last decade, it turned out to be a really good decision because we’ve come to realize if we still were in Ohio, both of us would be either unemployed or underemployed."

She says her dive shop has never had a bad year – it’s always made money. And she’s not the only American to have seen the potential in Mexico.

Real estate broker Carol Billups said, "There are over a million Americans living in Mexico and that is expected to go up to eight million within the next five to six years, so it is an explosion."

But while Jane Garling’s Los Cabos lifestyle is working out better than her old Cincinnati one, she hasn’t completely given up on America.

Jane Garling said, "We’ll retain our U.S. citizenship and our rights to Medicare and that would be the only thing, I think, that would get us back in the States, is a serious, long-term illness."

But for now, life is good in Los Cabos.
