The violent storm that hit China's southern Guangdong Province Wednesday has disrupted traffic on some roads and inundated some villages and schools. There are even problems with the only bridge that connects Xiaozhen Village to the nearest school in Xinjiang county of Guangdong Province. Today is the first day that children resumed classes. So, how did they go to school?

Today classes resumed in Xinjiang County Central School. After the bell we can still see some empty seats in the classroom. The students that were able to make it had to make great efforts to attend classes.

I came to student He Zhongtian's home early in the morning to experience his first day of resumed classes.

Zhongtian's father told me that after the bridge was damaged by the heavy rainstorm, children in Xiaozhen Village had to travel another sixteen kilometers to go to school. In order to prepare Zhongtian's breakfast, his parents have to get up before sunrise.

On Zhongtian's way to school, we can see other parents taking their children to school on motorcycles. It takes them over an hour to get school. But for those families who can't afford a motorcycle, their efforts are even greater.

Lin Qiulin, teacher of Xinjiang County Central School, said, "Though some of the students are late, they can get here within ten minutes after the bell. That really moved me."

Xinjiang County Central School has a total of twelve hundred and eighty students. Nearly one hundred of them were late due to the damaged bridge. Twenty one of the students failed to go to school because the rainstorm destroyed their homes. The local government says they will repair the bridge as soon as possible so as to bring a normal life back to these children.
