The China-Arab states forum began at the start of the new millennium after China and Arab states witnessed a steady growth in friendship and cooperation. Now, let's take a look at the development of this 6-year-old relationship.

After years of preparation and negotiation between the two sides, the China-Arab Cooperation Forum was formally established in January 2004 when Chinese President Hu Jintao visited Arab League headquarters in Cairo.

The forum is designed to serve as a platform for exchanging views between China and Arab nations and promoting a mutually beneficial cooperation in politics, economy and trade, culture, technology and international affairs.

The ministerial meeting comprises the AL secretary general and foreign ministers of China and all AL members. It is the permanent mechanism of the forum and convenes for a regular session every other year, with the option for extraordinary sessions if necessary.

So far three meetings have been held in different cities of the two sides over the past six years. And the fourth one is underway.

A number of other high-level meetings have also been held under the framework, which has also witnessed the implementation of a series of exchange projects.
