The Royal Canadian Mounted Police and Canadian Defense Department are investigating a bomb threat made against a Cathay Pacific flight from Hong Kong to Vancouver. The threat was allegedly made on the phone while the flight was in the air.

Canadian security and defense officials rushed to scramble two F-18 hornet jets shortly after the bomb threat was received.

The jets met Cathay Pacific flight CX839 mid-air and escorted it safely to Vancouver airport. It's not known how far away the plane was from its destination when the threat was made.

The jets didn't land at Vancouver with the passenger plane, but returned back to their air base.

A passenger said, "I saw the one fighter plane with us. When it was 80 miles away from the airport and when we landed he gone."

"I was scared."

On arrival at Vancouver airport, the plane was towed to a secure, isolated area on the tarmac where police were waiting.

Passengers disembarked immediately while the plane was searched and all baggage scanned.

A passenger of Cathay Pacific Flight 839 said, "They told us that there was some sort of terrorist problem and the baggage would be held up."

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police said that "nothing of concern" was found on the plane and that no-one was hurt during the incident.

Royal Canadian mounted policeman Sherrdean Turley said, "The threat is being taken very seriously and I would just like to reassure the traveling public that there's no threat to them at this time."

Both the police and defense officials are remaining tight lipped about the specifics of the bomb threat refusing to give out any details on where the alleged call was made or if they have any suspects in custody.
