Reconstruction efforts are continuing after two sections of a national highway collapsed in Wenchuan county in southwest Sichuan province. One way traffic has resumed during certain periods of the day.

National Highway 213 has become known as Wenchuan county's "lifeline" as rebuilding work continues after the devastating 2008 earthquake.

Late Monday, heavy rain caused two sections the road to collapse.

Around 5,000 cubic meters of earth and rock slid into the Min River.

The landslide closed an 80-meter section in Maoxian County and 70-meters of the road in Wenchuan County.

Teams have been working round the clock to rebuild the highway.

From Wednesday morning, controlled one way traffic began during certain hours of the day.

So far about two fifths of the road base has been restored.

But stronger water flows are threatening to breach a retaining wall which would result in a new halt to traffic and an end to the reconstruction work.

Construction manager Du Jianglin said, "To protect the wall, we have been throwing cages of stones down, but the flood is too strong. The cages fell down and disappeared. This is the most difficult part. "

More than 10,000 vehicles use the highway each day. Now many are having to wait until it is fully rebuilt.
