Prosecutors may decide against legal action against a driver following an accident in Ningbo in which a cyclist was killed. Instead, the driver is being sentenced to do community volunteer work to wipe his state clean.

Wang is a container lorry driver from Shandong province. In March, his truck hit an electric bike as he made a right turn with his truck. The cyclist was killed and police detained Wang.

Mr. Wang, lorry driver, said, "There's nothing like the pain of losing freedom and missing family members. It must have been terribly painful for the victim's family too."

The Traffic police determined Wang was at fault for the accident. But prosecutors were able to drop the lawsuit according to a new regulation that came in effect this year.

The new regulation stipulates that law breakers may repay their transgressions by doing social service, on the precondition they are willing to repent for their misbehavior.

Yu Zhenwei, prosecutor, said, "Wang didn't cause the accident on purpose, and he didn't violate traffic rules. The new regulation applies to his case. We've given him a two month period to allow him show his regret by doing social service."

Shu Lisong, traffice police, said, "Assisting traffic police at crossroads and telling his stories as an example of what to avoid to the public will be his major tasks during the two months."

The period ends on August 6th. Traffic police will generate an assessment report which will then decide the fate of the driver.
