Hide and seek is a popular group game among children and is never considered a dangerous activity. But for arrested personnel, the game can be strikingly lethal.

In February 2009, 24-year-old Li Qiaoming was arrested for stealing wood logs in Yuxi county, Yunnan province. After spending 11 days in a detention center, he died of "severe brain injury." Local police claimed he was hurt while playing hide and seek with his jail mates.

Several days later, government investigators found out what really happened. Li Qiaoming had been beaten and tortured by his jail mates. Prosecutors arrested two police guards on charges of neglect of duty. They were sentenced to one year in jail.

In another case involving police brutality in Shaanxi province, police tortured a high school student to extract a confession. But the student died before the police got what they needed. In the end, the men responsible received jail terms ranging from one year to two years and a half.
