This year China has put forward two of the country's abundant heritage sites to the Convention. They are the Dan Xia landform and Songshan Mountain. Now Peter Koveos will take us there and give us a closer look at the two heritage sites.
The age-old architecture complex, seated in Songshan Mountain, has witnessed the span of time from as early as the East Han Dynasty to the Qing Dynasty. The complex of ancient buildings is considered of great historical and aesthetic value, reflecting the origin of the splendid Chinese civilization.
Songshan Mountain is located in the Dengfeng city of Henan province. Around 13 kilometers southeast of the center of Dengfeng city sits an ancient temple. It's is believed to have been built in 723 AD in the Tang Dynasty. A stone tablet inside the temple shows that the second son of King Wen of Zhou once came to Songshan Mountain for a geological survey. And from its findings the ancient people believed that Songshan Mountain was in the center of Heaven and Earth. Consequently the location has become one of the most frequently visited places by numerous emperors of China.
Researcher Lv Hongjun said, "There's a popular belief among ancient Chinese, saying Songshan Mountain is the center of the world. And this center boasts a definite supremacy compared to everywhere else. It is regarded as the origin of all creatures on the planet where the Yin meets the Yang. And this belief has glorified Songshan Mountain and made it a sacred place for rituals and ceremonies."
Over the centuries Songshan Mountain has constantly evolved with the times embracing various religions including Confucianism, Buddhism and Taoism, resulting in an architectural complex of various styles. Shaolin Temple, home of Chinese Kungfu is also there.
