Qingshui county in Northwest China's Shaanxi Province has suffered its biggest flood since 1959. The county had its connection with the outside world severed until a rescue team reached there.
The county is surrounded by mountains. There is still no water, and no electricity. The extent of the disaster wasn't known until soldiers equipped with a satellite phone arrived on Monday.
Roads into the county were destroyed by the flood and the only access is on foot.
Houses collapsed in the rushing water leaving only their broken walls and ruined curbs.
Villager Hu Yingxing said, Three houses were collapsed. All the resident's personal possessions were still inside.
Hu Peizhi, said, I'm 83 now, never seen such heavy flood.
Six of 10 villages in Qingshui County were seriously damaged by the flood.
No injuries or deaths are reported but more than four-thousand residents are affected.
Li Jian, Secretary of Qingshui county, said, The biggest problem we are facing now is lack of food, and daily necessities. The local government is working on it, and trying to transport materials into our county.
Villager Hu Yingxiang said, Now we only have potatoes, and a half bag of rice. It can last for 2 or 3 days for the 6 people in my family.
The local government has already prepared goods and materials for the residents. Soldiers will help to transport them into Qingshui county as soon as possible.
