Chlorine leakage under control in Guangyuan city, Sichuan

Chlorine has leaked from a tank at a swimming pool in Guangyuan city, Sichuan Province. The incident happened when staff were cleaning the pool. Local government immediately organized rescue work and the situation is now under control.

Rescue teams were quickly mobilized by local government after the incident. Access to the leakage scene was blocked and residents living nearby were notified about the incident. Firefighters and ambulances were soon at the scene.

Firefighters used high pressure hoses to dilute the gas. The chlorine tank was placed under water to prevent any further leakage.

A firefighter said, The tank is huge so the pressure is high. The tank has been put in the swimming pool and we are adding more water to neutralize the gas.

More than 250 kilograms of caustic soda was rushed to the scene to neutralize the poisonous gas.

After more than seven hours of hard work, all the gas was cleared.

More than a thousand residents living nearby have been transferred to safety. Victims poisoned by chlorine have mostly recovered and been discharged from hospital.

The cause of the incident is still under investigation.
