Unlike technical schools that turn migrant laborers into entry-level assembly line workers, top flight occupational schools are the birthplace of experienced industry professionals with both the skill and the know-how. Educators believe these schools are vital to meeting the huge market demand for highly skilled workers.
Senior nurses capable of handling complicated medical situations, skilled industry workers who know how to improve current production techniques, and auto technicians who understand everything about a car... these types of workers are in great demand.
However, a survey shows that currently, senior technicians only account for less than point-26 percent of China's entire workforce. Some educators believe these types of schools should be promoted more.
Prof. Cai Zehuan, Xiangfan Occupational School, said, "Many top notch occupational schools have either become a larger version of a technical college or a compressed graduate program."
For Professor Cai, it's impressive that senior employees have more practical skills rather than simply theoretical knowledge.
Prof. Cai said, "Senior workers can turn blueprints into moulds, data, techniques and processes, it's a rare ability."
Yang Yulong, Instructor, Xijing Senior Occupational School, said, "Senior workers can produce things and manage other workers."
Many other educators think senior occupational schools should focus more on sustainability and provide more opportunities for graduates in the job market.
