Since Thursday, 13 people have been killed and another 59 are still missing after landslides in Sichuan province. Officials estimate just over half a million people have been affected by the disaster with 20,000 evacuated.

The cities of Mianzhu and Dujiangyan, and the Wenchuan County are the worst hit areas. A section of the only highway linking Wenchuan to the provincial capital Chengdu is inundated in water four meters deep.

In Wenchuan, two barrier lakes have formed due to the landslide along sections of the Minjiang River, a tributary of the Yangtze River in its upper reaches. Nearly 10,000 people have been evacuated from villages around the barrier lakes.
