China urges peace in South China Sea

09-26-2010 08:32 BJT

China is stressing peaceful resolution through negotiation, in disputes concerning the South China Sea. Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Jiang Yu made the remarks on Saturday, while commenting on Philippine President Benigno Aquino III's recent utterances on the issue.

During a recent speech in the US, Aquino urged Southeast Asian countries to stand as a bloc, if necessary, in regard to the South China Sea issue. Jiang said China has worked, and will always work, for the peaceful resolution of South China Sea disputes, and hopes the concerned states share the same spirit.

Meanwhile, former Chinese State Councilor Tang Jiaxuan, who's attending the ongoing Singapore Global Dialogue, says maintaining peace and stability in the South China Sea is a common interest for China and ASEAN countries. He adds that China ensures legitimate freedom of navigation for other countries in the South China Sea, according to international law.
