Also included in Beijing's blueprint to ease its traffic situation are measures to improve public transportation. While the number of bus and subway lines continues to expand, they remain the last choice for many residents. Damion Jones now finds out how far from "ideal" users think their current options really are.

It usually costs less than half a yuan to take a bus in Beijing. But the low prices are still failing to attract as many passengers as expected.

A local resident of Beijing said, "I once wasted 40 minutes waiting for a bus. This wasn't even during rush hour. It really messed my plans for the day."

Spending more than half a hour waiting for a bus is a common occurrence. Then, when passengers finally do squeeze onto one of those crammed transports, they will very likely have to endure up to another hour stuck in traffic.

Spending more than half a hour waiting for a bus is a common occurrence.

Train intervals are more consistent, but the routes don't cover enough main arteries to serve as regular choices for many commuters, especially those living on the city's outskirts.

The inconveniences of long wait periods, and constant transfers, are quite daunting to many straphangers. The last straw for most is the significant distance from their home to a station.

A local resident of Bejing said, "The distance really puts me into a dilemma. Why are there so many bothers, when I just want to take a bus?"

Some analysts say community shuttle buses might be a good solution.

Professor Zhang Zhuting, transport of Management Institute, said, "There should be some sub-lines, or spurs. We should also add or cut bus routes, based on the flow of people, and their needs."

Low prices are not the only reason people use public transportation. Many say the things they need most are convenience and comfort, to help the experience replicate the feeling generated by driving a private car.
