After 24 years of trials and tribulations, China has become the sixth country in the world to master it. You may wonder how the spent fuel disposal system works.

This is a water-pressurized pool that is used to store the spent fuel.

As the spent fuel has a large amount of nuclear radiation, this process is designed to reduce the possibility of it leaking.

In most cases, the radiation won't be spent for tens of thousands of years.

Zhang Tianxiang, expert of China National Nuclear Corporation, "When we dispose of the spent fuel, we need to put it on a lifting device. Then, the device will transfer the spent fuel to a shearing machine, and that is the second step in the disposal process."

What you see here are the staff operating the mechanical main hand.

Behind the wall is an enclosed space called a heating room. Here a mechanical deputy is automatically operated according to orders from the staff outside.

The wall is more than a meter thick and the glass is made of lead. This is designed to prevent nuclear radiation from leaking.

Experts say the process is like cutting vegetables at home, however, it's much more complicated than that.

The largest shear force is more than 80 tons, while every cut is just 20 to 30 millimeters wide.

Zhang Tianxiang, expert of China National Nuclear Corporation, said, "We need to be very careful during the shearing process. The requirement is very strict, like the cutting position or the size."

After the shearing process, the nuclear fuel will be sent to equipment rooms.

These pictures show the inside of the rooms, where there are a large number of pipelines.

Experts say if line the pipelines up, the total length would come to more than one-hundred kilometers.

Whilst it is difficult for people to understand, one thing is certain, the new spent fuel disposal system will create a new way of producing clean energy efficiency.
