Housing is crucial in people's daily lives. But expensive housing is a problem for many middle and low income families in China. Jie Bai now finds out what can be done to help them.

This is an old apartment in southwest China's Chongqing Municipality. It's just fifty square meters, but is home to seven people from three generations. The only bedroom is crammed with three beds and a couch.

Liang Xiuying, one Chongqing resident said "It's too crowded. Even though we have a bunk bed, my son still can only sleep on the couch."

Though crowded, the family could find nowhere else to live. The rent for a two-bedroom flat in Chongqing costs around 15-hundred yuan a month. That's still too much for the Liang family.

"My only hope is to have a bigger apartment."

Another 10-thousand households in Chongqing face similar housing problems. But that will soon change. The municipal government has launched a public rental housing project. The first 78-hundred units are nearly finished. Middle and low income families can start applying for an apartment once rules are published.

"We are sure to apply for a flat!"

Excited about living in a new apartment, Liang brings her granddaughter to see what their future home looks like.

Chongqing resident Liang Xiuying said, "It's beautiful and looks very sweet. It's all my family needs, and we'll be very comfortable living here."

For most Chinese, a stable and comfortable home is "home sweet home." With the launch of the public rental housing project, thousands of low-income families in Chongqing will soon improve their living conditions.
