Sculptors around the world have gathered at Harbin city, northeast China to put the final touches on blocks of ice at the final day of the 25th International Ice Sculpture Competition. This year's event attracted 34 teams of sculptors from sixteen countries. Various translucent pieces of ice show the unique culture of each country as well as the imagination of the participants.

Blocks of ice are being scraped and chiseled as the competition entered its final day. Sculptors from each team are given a chunk of ice about two meters tall and two meters wide to showcase their talents.

There are ambitious competitors from countries with harsh winters such as Russia, Switzerland and Finland, but those from tropical countries like Malaysia and Thailand are also confident in their skills.

Liu Deben, organizer and judge, said, "Ice sculpture requires not only specialized ability, but also spirit and courage. The three day competition is conducted outside, and Harbin's temperature has been around minus 17 or 18 degrees Celsius, it's too low. If you don't have a determined spirit, and the perseverance to stand the freezing cold, then you cannot complete your sculpture."
