01-31-2011 08:50 BJT

As the spring festival approaches, transportation in the country is becoming more intense. China's Ministry of Transport, Ministry of Railways and Civil Aviation Administration, say they are trying their best to ensure travelers a safe journey home.

Safety was one of the key points officials stressed. Although more than 800 million journeys have been made during the past 11 days, they say travel was smooth.

Feng Zhenglin, Vice-Minister of Transport, said, "Road and water transportation in the country was in good condition and under control. Since the spring festival period began, 4 severe car accidents occurred and 31 people died, that is 43 and 31 per cent less than the same period of last year."

The peak is yet to come. Road and Air transport will meet their highest points tomorrow. Public security efforts have been boosted.

Shi Boli, Head of Transport Department of Civil Aviation Administration of China, said, "We have raised security level in civil aviation system in the country, and considered particularity of travelling in winter, to ensure passengers' safety."

He says, in some airports, an additional security check has been added at the terminal entrances. The Ministry of Transport also says it has enhanced maintenance supervision of key roads, bridges and tunnels.
