Sadly, some elderly Chinese people are forced to spend Spring Festival alone. But, volunteers and social workers are helping make the situation less miserable.

Seventy-six-year-old Dai Zhaoxiang is living all by herself in Beijing. Her only daughter is halfway across the planet, in the United States.

As the Spring Festival approaches, social workers stop by her home, helping her shop for the festival.

They also put up beautiful paper cuts on windows. The room begins to take on a festive mood.

Dai said, "I will have a very good Spring Festival here. You don't have to worry. The social workers have been taking good care of me."

Also aiding the elderly are more than 100 taxi drivers.

They drive the disabled and those more than 70-years-old for free.

A volunteer taxi driver said, "They usually go shopping or to hospitals. If their children are not around, the presence of a familiar taxi driver can sometimes bring comfort them."

Wang Zuozhen also lives in Beijing. One of his sons died several years ago. His wife is paralyzed.

To ensure his family's safety, his compound's management opened a special hotline for him in case of any emergency.

Days before the Spring Festival, they help clean and decorate the house.

Beijing resident Wang Zuozhen said, "My other sons all have to work. I want them be around for the festival. But I'm also worried the weather will affect their jobs. So when the property managers come, I'm very happy. I have someone to talk to."

Thanks to these volunteers, though they are not with their family, the lonely can be with friends.
