Large-scale land subsidence has occurred in a mining region of Ezhou City, in central China's Hubei Province. The accident has left a 5000-square-meter hole in the ground.

Many residents of Ding'ao village were awoken by noise and tremors, when the collapse occurred.

Today, the land is still slowly sinking. Luckily, workers were away for Spring Festival, when the main subsistence took place.

No casualties were reported. But villagers are worried about their safety.

Hong Xifu, Ezhou Land Bureau, said, "We told the mine managers to stop mining in this area in November. A football field sized cavity had formed by that time. We said if it gets larger, land subsidence is bound to happen. "

Zheng Xieanwei, Geological Expert, said, "The point is their methods were wrong. On the one hand, the span between their supports was too large; on the other hand, they didn't adopt "open stope" method, and leave pillars of standing rock."

The area was authorized for mining in 2007. Local authorities say the mine was operating legally. But why then were residents allowed to continue planting in the area?

"This land should not be used for planting, because this is a mining area. There must be something wrong with the land management." Zheng said.

Some villagers' homes have even begun to develop cracks. The local government is now making plans to evacuate people living in these homes, and seal off the road leading to the subsidence site. A further investigation will be conducted in the next 10 days.
