Imported milk has become the first choice for an increasing number of parents on the mainland. The sales of imported milk powder in major Chinese cities are hitting historic highs.

Many consumers in Shanghai are still persistent in finding milk powder imported from Japan, since they were banned in April last year due concerns over cattle diseases.

Consumer from Shanghai said, "I came here to ask whether they sell Japanese baby formula. The salesgirl said they have been off the shelves for more than three months. I went to other supermarkets and they don't have the product either."

In most Shanghai supermarkets, imported milk powder sells better than domestic made ones. Figures from the Ministry of Agriculture shows that the amount of imported baby formula last year hit a historic high. With more parents favoring imported brands, they're likely to take up more than half of the domestic market this year.

"Prices are the not issue. Safety always comes first." Parent from Shanghai said.

"The melamine thing still scares us. Imported ones are of better quality."

Some are even turning to the Internet. Seven thousand units of imported baby formula are sold on some online stores during peak season.

Analysts say such a sales boom reflects a distrust in domestic brands.

Xiong Fangjie, Official of Shanghai Health Bureau, said, "It shows that the public is now having strong doubt and distrust over the country's food security, in this case baby formula, since the outbreak of the melamine scandal three years ago.

The domestic milk powder industry seems to have hit a wall after the scandal.

Whether it can recover and how long it will take remains a big question.
