Tele interview: Suitability of western democracy in China

03-04-2011 08:59 BJT

Now let's hear an Asian insight on building an effective institution for democracy. For that, we're joined by Professor Kishore Mahbubani from the National University of Singapore.

1. There is a perception among some Chinese that the West is always trying to lecture other countries on democracy. What are some of the other models of democracy, and how do they differ from the West?

2. Singaporean statesman Lee Kuan Yew played an instrumental role in shaping his country's post-independence political system. On one hand, he openly claims the rise of China should be contained. However on the other hand, he also defends China's political structure, adding that the western model of democracy is not compatible with China. What's your opinion of this view?

3. In your book "The New Asian Hemisphere", you argue that the balance of global power is rapidly shifting from the West to the East. What is driving this transition?

4. What can developing countries learn from the Asian model of democracy?
