Studio interview: New media and China’s democracy

03-04-2011 09:02 BJT

1. A free media is full of diverse and competing voices. What role can this fulfil in China's democracy?

2. In what ways does the new media provide a more effective forum for public debate as opposed to traditional channels?

3. Social media provides a source of information as well as a venue for collaboration. How concerned are you that the government should strike a balance between maintaining appropriate control and ensuring freedom of speech?

4. The recent regional unrest and the governments' response have demonstrated once again the power of new media in moving masses and shaping events. But technologies are just tools and that their impact depends on whose hands they are in and the use to which they are put. What if they are used and taken advantages of by the wrong hands?

5. How should we promote open and equal access to a sound media system that best serves the public interest?
