Radiation check at Taoxian Airport

04-02-2011 20:44 BJT

Ever since Japan's nuclear crisis, "radiation check" is a phrase frequently spoken by the media. It is one of the standard checks conducted by the relevant authorities to passengers coming into China from abroad. CCTV reporter Greg Norman has been to one airport to find out about the process.

Preparing to work.

Twenty minutes before one flight landing at the Taoxian International airport in Northeast China's Liaoning Province, staff from the airport office of the Shenyang Entry-Exit Inspection and Quarantine Bureau are armed with special work clothes for the radiation check.

These lead anti-radiation clothes stand out as it protects the staff against Alpha and Beta rays.

Other protective equipment includes lead-protection glasses as well as N95 masks, which keep staff free of radioactive dust.

They are even equipped with radiation alarm devices.

Zhao Xiaojun, Shenyang Entry-Exit Bureau said "The function of this device is to protect staff from radiation pollution. When the radiation level is high, it will send alarm signals."

Then comes in an airplane, it's time for them to work.

The first step is to talk to the flight staff in order to get some basic knowledge of all the passengers' health condition.

After they get off the airplane, the passengers will go through a special gate called the "radiation detector."

Zhao Xiaojun explains its main function.

Zhao Xiaojun said "This machine can automatically conduct radiation checks to passengers when they go through it. If a high radiation level is found, it will make a loud sound."

Then a case.

The alarm attracts staff's attention, and they have to re-check the passenger.

In most cases, staff wearing these protective suits usually stand behind the screen, avoiding putting psychological pressure on the public.

After a short time, his glove is soaked with sweat.

Meanwhile, checking the radiation level of the passengers' luggage is another task.

Pets are not spared either.

In less than an hour, the passengers have all finished going through the procedure.

But for staff at the airport, they have no time to rest as another airplane is preparing to land.
