The fatal rail accident in Ali Mountain has put rail safety under public scrutiny. Light trains in the tourism resort are always crowded with passengers.

No order observed, visitors rush to get on the trains. There are no specific regulations on load capacities, and that's the price you have to pay for just a glimpse of Ali Mountain.

"We're crammed onto the small train just like sardines. Eight carriages are crowded tightly, very uncomfortable."

And that was exactly the situation before the recent derail accident. Each carriage is supposed to carry no more than 70 passengers but they often take more than 100.

Since February, to cope with growing numbers of tourists, the authorities added another four carriages. The eight carriage train is exposed to dangers when making turns. And this time an accident happened.

"The authorities in charge of forestry should be blamed. Before, the four carriage train was OK, not so dangerous."

The light trains often have to make many trips. With such rising numbers of tourists, management and maintenance appears to be lagging behind. One plausible reason for the rail accident was that a broken tree branch disturbed the train's operation. With the investigation still ongoing, the uthorities will need to take a close look at the safety situation. And safety issues will make people concerned unless substantial improvements are made.
